Android has come with a solution to bring the accessories development closer. Using Arduino an other low cost hardware pieces and the Android Open Accessory Kit (ADK), now developers and amateurs can develop their own custome made accessorires.

Use of projection to create multiplayer/social environment where all connected users will be able to see others projections through video conferencing is a possibility.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality is the future. We can look forward to true location awareness. We can also expect a range of devices offering AR replacements for traditional methods of human input, ranging from projected keyboards and touchpads to eye-controlling your phone and accessory via a heads-up display while playing. AR is also likely to fill the void between 2D projection and holographic, allowing users to conference and work in a CG environment, sharing information and tools and interacting via virtual controls and workspaces.

Laser based displays

MEMS (microelectromechanical systems)-based laser projectors can display images directly on our retinas while not blocking our sight, enabling mixed reality vision. The beauty is that it is so small that it can already be integrated into eyeglasses.

Brain waves sensing

We need to control the functions by the mind to become really hands free.  Aided by eye tracking, direct brain links will provide touch-less input.

What do I think is the future of Mobile accessories?

In researching the topic of mobile accessories I found amazing ways that individuals are creating their own accessories. Two years ago iOS 3, the External Accessory Framework, allowed developers in the MFI program to build external hardware that can connect directly into the iPhone and just this past May the Andriod Accessory (API) and Developement kit (ADI) has be released for applications to communicate with peripherals via USB.

I dug a little deeper and found a group from the University of Michigan developing and selling kits to let other developers to allow them to use the headphone jack on the iphone to create cubic-inch sensor peripherals that interact with their iPhones. They have created some simple protoypes but this opens up the possibilities of what we can do with our mobile phones.

Health care could benefit from these external sensors being used to monitor patient health 24 hours a day. Doctors could monitor Chronic diseases with a sensory mobile accessory with the added functionality of it connecting with an app that then monitors and collects the patients vitals. Not only could they monitor patients data and it could be sent directly to your doctor, or your data could be exported to cloud based health service that could be accessed by health care professionals anywhere.

Glucose monitoring meters attached to your iPhone are already being developed and protoyped right now.

But back in the realm of the developer we can start creating and using analog devices like temperature sensors, moisture sensors, humidity sensor without an external power source today.

From my research and studies, I came to know that mobile phone cases and other accessories making our phone look crispy are still in use but by the time passes we are getting more inclined towards how to make our phone more useful. So now comes External Mobile Accessories. These are the things that run on different small platforms most likely ” Adruino”  . But the technology is going more further as Apple launches its iOS Development Kit. In return Google patched up with Adruino.

We can very well say its going to be a tug of war between mobile companies and their accessories in upcoming time.
